As summer comes to a close, the excitement of a new school year begins to build. However, transitioning from the relaxed days of summer to the structured routines of school can be challenging for both parents and students. With a few simple strategies, you can ease the transition and set the stage for a successful back to school.

How to Ease into A Back-to-School Routine for Your Homeschool

Sometimes we just fall into a routine as summer comes to an end, but sometimes, especially as my kids get older, I find myself easing them back into a routine because their course loads are heavier and I don’t want to throw everything at them on day one.

I’m going to tell you just how I do it for a smooth year. Last year, was our smoothiest, happiest homeschool year ever! And I want you to have one just like it!

Start Adjusting Bedtimes Early

One of the biggest challenges in the back-to-school transition is getting back on a regular sleep schedule. Instead of waiting until the night before school starts, begin adjusting bedtimes a week or two in advance.

Gradually move bedtime up by 15-30 minutes each night until your child is back on their school schedule. This gradual approach will help their bodies adjust naturally, leading to less resistance and more restful nights.

Bonus: they just might start waking up earlier for school so you don’t have to worry about them crawling out of bed at noon on a homeschool day.

Create a Morning Routine That Works

Mornings can be hectic, especially when everyone is trying to get out the door on time. Creating a morning routine that is predictable and efficient can help reduce stress for the entire family.

Involve your child in setting up this routine by discussing what needs to be done each morning and in what order. Consider setting out clothes and packing lunches the night before to make mornings smoother.

It doesn’t take kids long to figure out their routine. My kids know that on a school day, it’s up, breakfast, dressed, teeth, all that stuff and then we get the school work started. There are a couple of chores that do need to be done before school lessons like feeding the dogs and putting the eggs to the road for sale. Things that they do all year long not just during the school year.

Establish a Designated Work Space

Having a dedicated space for work can help your child focus and get into the habit of getting their work done regularly.

There are a few things to consider when you choose a space for school to happen, and each child’s and each family’s needs and and requirements are going to be different:

  • A quiet spot in your home where your child can work without distractions.
  • A space is stocked with all the necessary supplies, such as pencils, paper, and a calculator.
  • Establishing a consistent time and place for homework will make it easier for your child to settle down and complete their assignments.

You don’t have to do every subject in one space. If you have the room, move around! And don’t forget you can take your lessons anywhere, outside or at the library for example.

Reconnect with Learning

During the summer, academic skills can sometimes take a backseat to fun and relaxation. To help your child get back into the learning mindset, start incorporating educational activities into your daily routine before school starts.

This could include reading together, working on puzzles, or practicing math skills through games. Reengaging with learning will help make the transition back to school smoother.

Involve Your Child in the Process

Transitioning back to school is easier when your child feels involved in the process. Talk to them about what to expect in the coming year and listen to any concerns they might have.

Let them help with back-to-school shopping, and picking out their supplies. Ask them what they are interested in learning about. This year that includes learning more about becoming a veterinarian and a chef.

Giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility will help them feel more confident and excited about the new school year.
