Spring is a wonderful time of year to explore nature with children. After a long winter, the return of warmer weather and longer days can inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity in the natural world.

Tips for Exploring with Children in the Spring

Whether you live in the city, suburbs, or countryside, there are many opportunities to connect with nature and learn about the plants, animals, and ecosystems that surround us.

I am the first to admit, I am not an outdoor girl. I am an indoor girl. BUT I have always made a point of getting outside with my kids, even when I didn’t want to. I want them to have those amazing core memories, like puddle jumping, and picking flowers.

It’s not easy to get out there and do it, but here are some ideas for exploring nature with children in the spring:

Observe the Signs of Spring

Take a nature walk and look for signs of spring, such as budding trees, blooming flowers, and singing birds. Talk to your child about the changes they see and what they think is causing them.

Go on A Wildflower Hunt

Take a hike in a local park or nature reserve and look for wildflowers. Use a field guide or nature app to identify different species, and encourage your child to take photos or make sketches.

Visit A Butterfly Exhibit

Many botanical gardens and nature centers have butterfly exhibits in the spring. Visit one with your child to see butterflies up close and learn about their life cycle.

Explore A Pond or Stream

Take a trip to a local pond or stream and explore the aquatic ecosystem. Look for tadpoles, fish, and other water creatures. Use a net to catch and release small fish and insects.

Plant A Garden

Gardening with your child, and teaching them about how plants grow and what they need to thrive is fun and exciting. Plant vegetables or flowers and watch them grow throughout the season.

Listen for Bird Songs

Listen to the songs of different birds, and try to identify them by their calls. Use a bird guide or nature app to learn more about different species.

Look for Animal Tracks

Look for animal tracks in the mud or snow, and try to identify the animals that made them. Talk to your child about animal behavior and survival in the wild.

Build A Birdhouse or Bird Feeder

Build a birdhouse or bird feeder with your child, and place it in a tree or in your backyard. Observe the birds that visit and identify different species.

Have A Nature Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of items to find in nature, such as a butterfly, a ladybug, or a dandelion. Go on a scavenger hunt in a local park or forest, and check off the items as you find them.

Take A Nature-Themed Field Trip

Visit a local science center, museum, or zoo to learn more about the natural world. Many institutions have exhibits and programs on topics such as ecosystems, biodiversity, and conservation.

Exploring nature with children in the spring can be a fun and enriching experience for the whole family. Encourage your child’s curiosity and creativity by providing opportunities to connect with the natural world.
